Thursday evening x 2 weeks - 5th & 12th September 2024
Thursday evening x 2 weeks - 5th & 12th September 2024
This course will run over two consecutive Thursday evenings from 6.30 - 9pm both days. The first Thursday I will introduce you to the pottery wheel, discuss the type of clay we will be using, and guide you through the essential techniques for centering on the wheel and pulling up the walls, enabling you to start crafting beautiful pots, cups, and bowls.
On the second Thursday we will be learning how to Turn the pieces we created the week before. Turning is a critical process that involves removing excess clay and refining the overall shape of your pottery. You will also have the opportunity to create handles, transforming some of your items into beautiful cups. If you would like to spend additional time on it, you can decorate your creations using colored slips and underglazes. Alternatively, if you prefer a simpler approach, you can choose a glaze from a selection of vibrant colors, and I will take care of glazing your pots for you.
The course fee includes 4 pieces of finished work for you to keep, with additional pieces available for an extra charge. Those pieces will remain at the studio to dry, undergo a bisque firing, be glazed, and will be fired a second time to reach a temperature of 1200°C. You can expect them to be ready for collection—or shipped at an additional cost—approximately 3 to 4 weeks later.
I will provide tools, a good quality clay and aprons. Wear something that enables you to sit around the pottery wheel comfortably and roll your sleeves up to your elbows. A layer that keeps your body warm and arms free is good to have.
Due to the small class size (4) the class may not go ahead if there are not enough participants.
No refunds can be given if you cancel with less than 10 days notice. After 10 days you can transfer your space to someone else of an equal level of experience if you wish.
If I need to cancel a class, due to not having enough participants, you will get 5 days notice. Please make sure your accommodation (if required) allows full refunds for cancellations within that window. If I am unable to attend l a class due to illness or other emergency, I will notify you as soon as possible and/or try my best to find a replacement teacher.
Please be aware that wheel throwing for a full day can be a physically intense and tiring experience, especially if you suffer from any back issues, but you are free to move about, grab a cup of tea and wander around the garden at any stage.
The course price does not include postage of the ceramics after the glaze firing (ususally no more than €13).
